The Verb To Be (ser/estar)


Yo- I

Ellos- They
Eso- It (objetos)

Positive                        Negative
I am (I'm)                      I am not
He is (He's)                  He is not (He isn't) 
She is (She's)               She is not (She isn't)

Examples:

1. I am a student.
2. He is a doctor.
3. She is my sister.
4. We are a family.
5. They are a couple.
6. It is red.

Use the verb to be to express location:

1. I'm at the park.
2. He is at home.
3. She's at the cinema.
4. We are at the stadium.
5. They're at the restaurant.
6. It is on the kitchen.

To make questions pay attention to these examples:

Yes/no questions
Is it your cell phone? Yes, It is
Am I a teacher? Yes, I am
Are you a lawyer? Yes, I am
Is it your car? Yes, it is. 
Is he your lawyer? Yes, he is.

Interviewer: What´s your name?

Thomas: Thomas

Interviewer: And where do you live?

Thomas: Boston

Interviewer: How old are you?

Thomas: I´m 23

Interviewer: And what do you do?

Thomas: I am a teacher.

Interviewer: Have you got any brothers or sisters?

Thomas: Yes, I do. I have a sister.

Interviewer: How old is she?

Thomas: She is 28

Interviewer: And what does she do?

Thomas: She´s a manager at a café.

Interviewer: And what´s the name of the café?

Thomas: The Fresh Pot Café.

Interviewer: And what does she do in the café?

Thomas: She sorts out timetables and takes care of orders and stockings and general maintenance of the café.

Interviewer: Ok, thanks. What´s your favorite film?

Thomas: The Godfather.

Interviewer: And why do you like it?

Thomas: Because it´s a long story that includes interesting characters, and has a fantastic plot. And it takes place in my hometown, New York.

Interviewer: ah, very interesting. Are you reading a book at the moment?

Thomas: Yes I am.

Interviewer: And what´s the name of the book?

Thomas: The book is called the House of Leaves.

Interviewer: And what´s it about?

Thomas: It´s about a family that moves into a house that has many, many more rooms that anybody could have imagined.

Interviewer: ah interesting. What are your parents´ names?

Thomas: My father´s name is Donald and my mother´s name is Pamela.

Interviewer: Ok, and what do they do?

Thomas: Donald is retired and my mother owns a teashop.
